Is a refurbished laptop worth it?

Often yes, if you know what "refurbished" means from each seller. It means different things.

A refurbished laptop can be the best value in computing or a used machine with a new sticker. The word covers both. What separates them is who did the refurbishing and what they promise.

The grades

Most reputable sellers grade stock. Grade A is near-new, no visible marks. Grade B has light cosmetic wear. Grade C is functional with obvious use. The grades aren't standardised across sellers, so read each seller's definition. A "Grade A" from one seller may be another's B.

Who refurbished it

Manufacturer refurbished (Apple, Dell Outlet, Lenovo Outlet): tested by the maker, new battery in many cases, full warranty. The best kind, and the price reflects it.

Retailer refurbished (Currys, Argos clearance): usually customer returns, tested and reboxed, shorter warranty. Good value and the returns process is a known quantity.

Third-party refurbisher: ranges from professional outfits with proper testing and a year's warranty to a marketplace seller who wiped the drive. Judge on the warranty length and the returns policy, not the description.

What to check

Battery: ask for the cycle count or health percentage; below 80 percent health means it'll need replacing. Warranty: twelve months minimum from a business seller. Spec: refurbished stock is often business models with better keyboards and build than consumer equivalents at the same price, which is a genuine advantage.

The maths

A two-year-old business laptop refurbished by the maker typically sells at 40 to 50 percent of its original price and will last another four years. That's better value than a new budget laptop at the same money, which will have a worse screen, keyboard and build. If you don't need the latest chip, refurbished is the smarter buy.
