Large appliances are the purchases where a patient buyer saves the most. A washing machine, dishwasher or fridge-freezer is on sale somewhere almost every week, and the same model can swing £100 or more between retailers in the space of a month. The trick is knowing which drops are real and which are a high RRP dressed up as a discount.

How to read an appliance deal

Ignore the percentage on its own. Retailers set their own "was" price, and some set it high so the discount looks large. What matters is the price against what the product has actually sold for recently, which is why every deal page here shows its own price history. A £329 dishwasher that has never been more than £349 is not a bargain; one that was £449 last month is.

Check the model number, not the name. Manufacturers sell near-identical machines under several codes for different retailers, and a retailer's exclusive code can't be price-matched anywhere. If two listings look the same but the codes differ by a letter, treat them as different products.

What the specs mean

Energy rating. Since the 2021 rescaling, A is the best available and most decent machines sit at B to D. A machine one letter better typically saves £10 to £30 a year in electricity, so it matters on a fridge-freezer that runs all day, much less on a dishwasher used four times a week.

Capacity. For washing machines, 8 kg suits a couple, 9 to 10 kg a family of four. Bigger drums cost more to run when half full. For dishwashers, 13 to 14 place settings is a full-size machine; slimline models fit 9 to 10 and suit smaller kitchens.

Noise. Anything under 45 dB is quiet enough for an open-plan kitchen. Above 50 dB you'll hear it through a closed door.

Spin speed on washers above 1400 rpm makes little practical difference; it's mostly a number to sell against.

When appliance prices drop

Prices move most around Black Friday (late November), Boxing Day to mid-January, and the bank holiday weekends in May and August. Manufacturers also refresh ranges in spring, which pushes the outgoing models down through March and April. Buying a last-year model in April is often the cheapest route to a premium brand.

Outside those windows, individual retailers run their own promotions on rotation. That's why the daily refresh matters: a Hughes or AO price can drop mid-week with no announcement and be back up by Friday.

What to avoid

Extended warranties sold at checkout are almost always poor value against the manufacturer's own guarantee, which is typically two years and often five on premium brands if you register the product. Delivery, installation and old-appliance removal can add £30 to £60 and vary by retailer, so compare the delivered price, not the ticket. And be careful with "graded" or "ex-display" stock: it can be excellent value, but check the returns policy before you buy.
