Tech pricing moves faster than any other category on this site. Graphics cards, storage and memory follow component markets that shift weekly; phones and consoles follow release cycles that are announced months ahead. A good deal in tech is usually about timing.

How to read a tech deal

The Amazon UK price is the reference that matters here, because Amazon is where most tech is actually bought. Every product page on this site shows the retailer's price against Amazon's current price for the same product code, so you can see whether the gap is real. A retailer that is £30 under Amazon on a monitor is a genuine deal; one that is £30 under its own RRP but level with Amazon is not.

For anything with a model year — GPUs, phones, TVs — check whether the successor has launched. The previous generation drops sharply in the weeks after a new release and often stays low.

What the specs mean

Storage. An NVMe SSD is faster than a SATA SSD, which is far faster than a hard drive. For a laptop or games console, NVMe is worth the small premium. For bulk storage of photos and video, a large hard drive is still the cheapest per terabyte.

Memory. 16 GB is the sensible floor for a working laptop or a gaming PC in 2026; 32 GB matters for video editing and modern games at high settings. DDR5 is current; DDR4 is cheaper and still fine for an existing DDR4 system.

Monitors. Refresh rate (Hz) matters for gaming, resolution matters for work. A 27-inch 1440p panel at 144 Hz is the value sweet spot; 4K only pays off at 32 inches or above.

Graphics cards. Judge on the model tier, not the brand partner. An RTX 5070 from ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte performs the same; the price difference is cooler design and warranty.

When tech prices drop

Prime Day (July), Black Friday, and the January sales are the big three. Component prices also react to launches: when a new GPU generation lands, the previous one drops within a fortnight. Console bundles are cheapest in the run-up to Christmas and immediately after. Phones drop three to four months after launch and again when the next model is announced.

What to avoid

Grey imports without a UK warranty; "refurbished" listings without a stated grade; and bundles where the headline discount is on the accessory rather than the main item. For storage, check the warranty term — three years versus five is a real difference on a drive that holds your photos.
