Power tools are one of the few categories where the professional and the home buyer shop the same products, and where the professional retailers — Toolstation, Screwfix, Tooled Up — routinely undercut general retail. Brand ecosystems matter here: once you own one manufacturer's batteries, you're buying their tools for a decade.

How to read a tools deal

Bare tool or kit? The same drill can be listed with no battery ("body only"), with one battery, or with two and a charger, and the price triples across those. Deal pages here show the product name in full so you can see which it is. A "50% off" body-only tool is not a bargain if you have no batteries.

RRPs in tools are notoriously inflated: DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee list prices that no UK retailer charges. Treat the Amazon comparison and the price history as the real measures.

What the specs mean

Voltage. 18 V is the standard for serious work; 12 V tools are lighter and fine for household jobs. The two aren't cross-compatible within most brands.

Brushless. Brushless motors run cooler, last longer and give more runtime per charge. On a tool you'll use weekly, worth the premium; on one you'll use twice a year, not.

Torque figures (Nm) are only comparable within a brand; manufacturers measure differently.

Battery capacity (Ah) is runtime, not power. A 5 Ah battery runs about twice as long as a 2.5 Ah one and weighs noticeably more.

When tool prices drop

Trade retailers run "deal of the week" cycles year-round. The big waves are Black Friday, the January trade sales, and spring (March to May) when DIY season starts. Manufacturer promotions — free batteries with a tool, redeemable by claim — are common in autumn and can be better value than a cash discount.

What to avoid

Unbranded batteries for branded tools (fire risk and warranty void); tools from marketplace sellers with no UK address; and blade or bit "packs of 50" where the per-item price is higher than buying five.
